The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon opened strong at the North American box office, raking in $83.7 million in its debut weekend. It outperformed other recent remakes and confirmed the enduring appeal of beloved animated classics.
Remakes are all the rage: Dragon, the live-action reimagining of the popular 2010 animated film, had a strong debut with $83.7 million in revenue, topping the North American box office, according to data from industry tracker Exhibitor Relations on Sunday.
This family film from Universal and DreamWorks Animation tells the story of a friendship between a young Viking named Harold (played by Mason Thames) and a dragon called Toothless, created with CGI.
“It’s an excellent opening for an animated film remake, and it’s particularly strong for the fourth installment of a franchise like this,” said David Gross, an analyst with Franchise Entertainment Research.
Dragon outpaced another live-action remake in theaters across Canada and the U.S., Lilo & Stitch, a new version of the 2002 animated classic.
This faithful adaptation tells the story of Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a lonely six-year-old Hawaiian orphan, and Stitch (recreated in 3D), a destructive alien disguised as a small, furry blue dog.
The film earned $15.5 million in its fourth week of release, bringing its global total to $860 million since launch.
The classic love triangle storyline featured in Materialists landed in third place at the box office. The film, starring Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, brought in $12 million during its opening weekend.
Tom Cruise, despite his signature stunt work, dropped one spot to fourth place with the latest installment of the Mission: Impossible franchise, earning $10.3 million in its fourth week.
The blockbuster, reportedly made with a budget nearing $400 million, has now grossed more than $500 million worldwide.
Finally, From the World of John Wick: Ballerina took fifth place. The young vengeful assassin, played by a fierce Ana de Armas, collected $9.4 million in its second week in theaters.
