The United States has expressed its support for the airstrikes carried out Thursday evening by Israel against Hezbollah positions in the southern suburbs of Beirut. In an official statement, a spokesperson for the US State Department reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against border threats.
"The United States supports Israel’s right to protect its citizens from Hezbollah and other terrorist groups that promote violence and oppose any prospects for peace," the spokesperson said.
"Hezbollah’s terrorist infrastructure and activities represent a serious threat to Lebanon’s sovereignty and security," the spokesperson added, reiterating Washington’s concerns about the armed Shia movement’s influence in the region.
