The 2025 municipal elections in Lebanon marked a notable increase in women’s representation, according to a study released Thursday by the Ministry of Interior.

Women secured 10.37% of the total elected municipal council seats, a significant rise compared to previous election cycles. In 2010, the figure stood at just 4.6%, increasing modestly to 5.4% in 2016, according to data published by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The upward trend extended to the mukhtar elections, where women accounted for 2.42% of those elected this year. That figure also represents progress over earlier cycles, which saw only 1.5% in 2010 and 1.9% in 2016.

While the percentages remain relatively low, officials and observers noted that the 2025 results signal a gradual shift toward greater gender inclusion in local governance.
