A knife attack injured 12 people, several of them seriously, at Hamburg’s central train station in northern Germany, firefighters and police said on Friday. A suspect has been taken into custody.
The attacker "injured several people with a knife in the central station," Hamburg police said in a statement posted on X. According to a spokesperson for the Hamburg fire department, contacted by AFP, several of the injured are in critical condition.
According to the newspaper Bild, the attack occurred on one of the platforms of the station in Germany’s second-largest city.
A large-scale emergency response operation is underway, police said, adding that they are "investigating the circumstances" of the attack.
Images published by several German media outlets showed injured individuals being treated on stretchers and a train platform cordoned off by security forces.
Germany has experienced several deadly knife attacks in recent months that have shocked the country, along with jihadist-motivated attacks and far-right violence, which have brought security issues to the forefront.
