Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stressed during their meeting on Wednesday that “there would no longer be any weapons outside the control of the state in Lebanon.”

This is a key decision since the Lebanese government does not exert authority over Palestinian refugee camps.

Mahmoud Abbas, who met with his Lebanese counterpart at Baabda palace, reaffirmed his commitment to Lebanon’s sovereignty and security.

During their meeting, both leaders pledged to end any armed activities operating outside the state’s authority.

To this end, Abbas and Aoun agreed on the need to strengthen coordination between Lebanese and Palestinian official authorities to maintain stability inside and around Palestinian refugee camps.

The Palestinian President reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring that Lebanese territory will not be used as a base for military operations and pledged to respect Lebanon’s policy of non-interference in the affairs of other countries, steering clear of regional conflicts.

Both sides also underscored the urgency of cooperating to combat terrorism and extremism, with a shared goal of preventing Palestinian camps from becoming safe havens for extremist groups.
