The deadline for submitting candidacies for municipal council and mukhtar elections in the South Lebanon governorate came to a close at midnight on Tuesday, under the supervision of Governor Mansour Daou. This phase, which began on April 28, was conducted using an upgraded digital system to streamline application processing.
Originally set for May 25, the elections have been moved up to Saturday, May 24, as the original date coincides with South Lebanon’s Resistance and Liberation Day.
By the Numbers
Official figures show that 1,145 candidates have registered to run for municipal councils in the Saida district, including 111 for seats within the city itself. Meanwhile, 324 individuals have filed to run for mukhtar positions, with three applications still under review.
Attention now shifts to the next stage: potential candidate withdrawals that could trigger automatic victories in certain races.
In the Nabatiyeh district, the candidacy window also closed at midnight. A total of 918 candidates are competing for municipal council seats, while 308 are running for mukhtar posts across 40 towns in the district.
Uncontested Wins in Tyre
In the Tyre district, several mukhtars were declared elected unopposed after the candidacy period ended. Villages where this occurred include Arzoun, Al-Bass, Rachidieh, Haniyeh, Zaloutiyeh, Al-Knaissah, Bafleh, Bestiyyat, Derdghaiya, Chabriha, Chihine, the Orthodox Quarter of Tyre, Mahrouna, Nafakhiyeh and Wadi Jilo.
