The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has established a discreet channel to facilitate indirect discussions between Israel and Syria, aiming to manage the tense relationship between the two countries, according to Reuters. This initiative comes as Syria's new leadership seeks regional support to address escalating tensions with Israel.
The previously unreported negotiations are primarily focused on security, intelligence and counterterrorism matters. These talks began after Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa visited the UAE in April, and have so far remained limited to “technical matters.” However, sources say there are no restrictions on what topics may eventually be discussed.
The back channel involves UAE security officials, Syrian intelligence personnel and former Israeli intelligence officers. Due to the sensitivity of the talks, the information was shared under condition of anonymity. Neither Syrian nor Emirati authorities responded to requests for comment.
This secret mediation effort preceded a series of Israeli strikes in Syria, including one near the presidential palace in Damascus. Israel framed these strikes as a response to threats against the Druze community in Syria. However, it remains unclear whether the communication channel has been used following these attacks.
