In light of the ongoing challenges facing Lebanon’s energy sector, a Lebanese ministerial delegation will travel to Baghdad to strengthen cooperation with Iraq. Finance Minister Yassine Jaber and Energy Minister Joe Saddi will be in Baghdad on Monday to revive discussions with Iraqi authorities regarding the supply of fuel to Lebanon’s electricity sector.
Jaber stated that the purpose of the visit is to "thank Iraq for its support during difficult times" and to enhance bilateral cooperation, particularly on several unresolved issues related to payment for previously delivered fuel. He recalled that Baghdad had supported Beirut during major crises in the past, including during wartime and fuel shortages that affected electricity production.
When asked about Lebanon’s ability to meet its financial commitments, the minister clarified that the visit is not intended to result in immediate payment. A law passed by the Lebanese Parliament stipulates that amounts owed to Iraq will be settled through an exchange mechanism involving goods and services. A dedicated fund has been established and partially financed, notably by Électricité du Liban (EDL). Additional contributions are expected soon, backed by parliamentary support for continuing repayments.
While in Baghdad, the Lebanese delegation is set to meet with several high-ranking Iraqi officials, including the President of the Republic and the Ministers of Oil and Electricity, as part of a broader discussion agenda. According to Jaber, the goal is to lay the groundwork for smoother, long-term cooperation between the two countries and to secure a stable energy partnership in the coming months.
