As global trade tensions between the United States and China continue to disrupt international markets, the president of the Lebanese Food Importers’ Union, Hani Bohsali, sought on Monday to reassure Lebanese consumers about the stability of food prices.

In a statement, Bohsali confirmed that food import prices to Lebanon remain stable despite ongoing fluctuations in world markets. He noted that the recent weakening of the US Dollar against other currencies, particularly the Euro, has not yet had a direct impact on local food costs. However, he cautioned that the Euro’s 8% rise against the Dollar could eventually raise the price of imported goods, given that nearly a third of Lebanon’s food imports come from Europe.

Moreover, Bohsali emphasized that any effects from currency fluctuations would take time to materialize and that, for now, the Lebanese market remains in a phase of stability.

“The Euro’s rise will not automatically translate into a general increase in prices,” he indicated, noting that Lebanon has diversified its sources of imports in recent years, especially during the financial crisis, by tapping into alternative markets.

Nevertheless, Bohsali acknowledged that certain European products remain difficult to replace due to local consumer preferences.

He added that the Food Importers’ Union would continue to monitor the situation closely and provide regular updates to ensure transparency and prevent any unjustified speculation or exploitation.
