Tensions flared once again along the Syrian-Lebanese border Thursday night, as clashes reportedly resumed between unidentified fighters on both sides of the border, with Syrian officials accusing Hezbollah of initiating the escalation.

A Syrian Ministry of Defense source told SANA that Hezbollah “fired five artillery shells from Lebanese territory towards Qusayr” region, west of Homs”.

According to local sources, a woman and a child were injured when Hezbollah shelling targeted the town of al-Masriya, located near the border. Shortly thereafter, retaliatory artillery fire from Syria was reported, striking the Mukhaybar crossing between Hosh al-Sayyid Ali and al-Qasr.

The violence escalated further when a drone bomb, reportedly launched from the western countryside of Homs, struck Hosh al-Sayyid Ali, injuring six Syrian refugees, according to LBCI. The wounded were transported to al-Batoul Hospital in Hermel for treatment.

Amid the renewed hostilities, gunfire echoed across the region, prompting the Lebanese Army (LAF) to deploy reinforcements in response to the unfolding security situation.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense then announced that it had halted its response to sources of fire in Lebanon at the request of the LAF, the latter taking over the pursuit of the perpetrators.

According to Damascus, the two sides have established “permanent” communication to manage the situation.
