A senior Hamas official told AFP Monday that a new Israeli ceasefire proposal crosses a "red line" with demands that the Palestinian militants disarm before any permanent end to the Gaza war.

"Hamas and the resistance factions' position is that the resistance's weapons are a red line and non-negotiable," the official said.

Israel had offered, through mediators, a ceasefire of at least 45 days in exchange for the release of half of the remaining hostages held in the Palestinian territory, the official said.

Egypt received an Israeli proposal for a temporary ceasefire in war-torn Gaza that would pave the way for negotiations towards a permanent cessation of hostilities, state-linked media said on Monday.

"Egypt has passed on the Israeli proposal to Hamas and is awaiting its response as soon as possible," sources told Egypt's Al-Qahera News, without giving further details about the proposal.
