The Fishermen’s Union of Lebanon’s southern coast on Monday released a statement urgently appealing to the government and relevant authorities, drawing attention to the growing challenges endangering the livelihoods of local fishing communities.
The union called for immediate interventions to protect fishermen’s rights, improve their living conditions, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the sector.
At the forefront of their demands is protection from “daily Israeli attacks,” which the union described as a “direct threat” to both the fishermen’s safety and their primary source of income. They urged the government to offer real and legal safeguards for both fishermen and their equipment.
The union also appealed for economic relief in light of the Israeli maritime blockade, which has severely hampered the fishermen’s work. Specific demands included direct financial aid, subsidized fuel and fishing gear, and access to soft loans to help resume fishing activities.
Key infrastructure concerns were also highlighted, particularly the urgent need to rehabilitate the ports of Tyre and Naqoura. The union warned of deteriorating conditions, especially in Naqoura, where the risk of boats sinking has increased due to a lack of safe anchorage and proper maintenance facilities.
Additionally, the union called for the inclusion of fishermen in national social security and healthcare programs, citing the hazardous nature of their work. They further advocated for awareness campaigns and educational programs to encourage sustainable fishing practices and help preserve Lebanon’s marine resources.
