Facing economic and technological challenges, Lebanon is turning towards a digital revolution to reshape its economy and services. In an interview with Akhbar al-’An, Kamal Shehadeh, Minister of the Displaced and State Minister for Technology Affairs and Artificial Intelligence, outlined an ambitious plan to modernize the country’s digital infrastructure. He stressed the importance of clear policies to attract investment and meet international standards.

The minister emphasized that solving internet-related issues is achievable, with plans to open up the sector and attract investment, particularly through the expansion of fiber optics and 5G. When it comes to digitizing public services, the focus is on streamlining and accelerating administrative procedures, drawing on successful models from countries like the United Arab Emirates.

However, digital payment services are lacking due to financial and regulatory challenges, beyond just technical issues. Shehadeh also highlighted the importance of supporting local startups to curb the brain drain and strengthening partnerships with Gulf countries to ensure the success of this digital transition.
He further clarified that the Ministry of Technology, with a focus on artificial intelligence, aims to improve citizens' lives by making public services faster and more accessible. The transformation is underway, with draft laws currently under review by the government.

Finally, Shehadeh stressed the need to boost investment in the technology sector to create an environment conducive to business development and the growth of Lebanon’s digital economy.
