Eggflation: When Eggs Turn into a Pricey Luxury!

Americans are grappling with an unexpected and rather baffling phenomenon: eggflation. A playful blend of “eggs” and “inflation,” this term describes the skyrocketing of egg prices across the United States. But why are these once-affordable eggs now so expensive? And how is this affecting households, restaurants and even fast-food giants? Let's delve into this trend that’s rattling the market.

Over the course of just one year, the price of eggs in the US has surged, jumping from under $2.52 in February 2024 to $8 per dozen in February 2025—a staggering increase of more than 65%. So, what’s behind this sudden price spike? The avian flu epidemic is a major factor. The outbreak has devastated millions of egg-laying hens in the US, with more than 130 million birds lost since 2022. As the virus spread rapidly, farmers were forced to cull millions of hens, drastically reducing the supply and driving prices up.

Then, inflation came into play. Like many other food products, the cost of producing eggs has soared: the price of poultry feed, shipping costs and labor have all increased dramatically. Add to that the challenges in global supply chains, and it’s no surprise that egg prices have reached new heights.

Scrambled Eggs Are Now a Luxury

A significant portion of the American population consumes eggs daily, but they are now facing soaring prices. This is a setback for those who relied on affordable eggs for quick, balanced meals. Some households have been forced to adjust their food budgets, seek alternatives or even reduce their egg consumption. A simple omelet or fried eggs for breakfast has become a luxury.

Eggflation isn't only affecting households. Restaurants and bakeries that use eggs in large quantities are also feeling the pressure. These businesses now have to manage much higher costs. Recipes for cakes, cookies and sandwiches could be impacted. For some restaurant owners, the dilemma is real: raise prices to compensate for the increased costs, or risk losing customers?

Fast-Food Giants Feeling the Squeeze

Eggflation is also hitting fast-food giants. Even McDonald's, known for its ability to absorb rising costs, isn't immune to this food inflation. Eggs are a staple ingredient in many of their menu items (such as the Egg McMuffin, salads, etc.), and the price hike directly impacts the profit margins of these companies.

What Alternatives Are Available to Consumers and Professionals?

One possible alternative is plant-based eggs, which could emerge as a solution. More and more brands are introducing plant-based eggs that are not only cheaper but also considered more eco-friendly. The “chickpea scramble” might just become the next big thing.
