Beirut's downtown is set to be revitalized before the end of March.
The President of Economic Organizations, Mohammad Choucair, held a meeting on Friday with Beirut’s mohafez, Marwan Abboud, as well as the city's municipal council president, Abdallah Darwish.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss measures to revive Beirut's downtown. Representatives from Solidere, as well as private business owners, were also present.
Mr. Choucair emphasized in his speech that with the removal of the barriers and concrete blocks around the Parliament area, "opportunities are now available to breathe new life into this vital area for all of us."
The goal of this meeting, he said, was to propose a set of ideas and establish a practical program to achieve the set goals. He invited businesspeople and investors to seize the economic opportunities offered by this dynamic region, particularly with the upcoming holidays and summer season. "The downtown will be like it was before 2005," he concluded.
A commission has been formed to oversee the implementation of the proposals put forward by the participants.
It was agreed to improve the lighting of Martyrs' Square and adjacent streets, and to renovate the sidewalks and walls in the area. This project will be carried out in partnership with economic organizations, the Governorate, Beirut’s municipality, MTV, Solidere, and SMS company.
The ultimate goal is to revive the downtown before the end of March.
