Yet, behind this enthusiasm lies a subtle but profound risk: the weakening of critical thinking and human creativity. By delegating intellectual functions to machines, we risk diminishing our ability to analyze, question and innovate, replacing personal reflection with the passive acceptance of ready-made responses.
Recent studies, including a joint investigation by Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University involving several hundred professionals, suggest that growing reliance on artificial intelligence tools is leading to a notable decline in critical analysis. As experts place increasing trust in automated systems, they gradually relinquish their own judgment. This has fostered a homogenization of ideas, with AI-driven reasoning becoming standardized, and individual initiative reduced to mere validation. Some researchers describe this trend as cognitive decline, warning of the clear risk of intellectual stagnation in both professional and academic spheres.
Beyond its impact on critical thinking, excessive reliance on generative AI threatens to standardize creativity. By offering ready-made solutions and instant content, these tools promote an approach where originality gives way to formulaic repetition. Cognitive psychology research published in 2024 compared the work of students using AI assistance to that produced through traditional methods. It first appeared in the 1980s with the widespread use of calculators, in the 2000s with GPS devices and over the past decade with smartphones, which gradually shifted certain mental functions to external devices. However, generative AI stands apart due to its ability to generate complete reasoning, thus diminishing the individual’s involvement in drawing their own conclusions. Experts, such as neuropsychologist Umberto León Domínguez, warn that this excessive externalization of cognitive faculties could turn the tool into a true intellectual prosthesis, undermining our ability to solve complex problems and engage in independent thinking.
Given the observed drawbacks, it is crucial to redefine our relationship with artificial intelligence tools. Instead of viewing them as replacements for thought, we should instead see them as additional tools aimed at enriching our intellectual pursuits. This approach, which is not a rejection of technological progress, calls for a balanced and thoughtful use, where the user retains control over analysis and interpretation. By adopting a critical mindset, we can counter the tendency toward cognitive passivity by consistently questioning automated responses in light of the real world’s complex realities. This becomes even more crucial because—contrary to what AI developers may believe—these systems, designed to provide answers “at all costs,” often produce numerous inaccuracies. Only by affirming our ability to think independently can we avoid becoming passive observers of progress that, without careful use, could diminish the very essence of our humanity.

In the 1990s, with the rise of the Internet, the term “information highway” embodied the optimism of a new era—one marked by universal connectivity and instant access to an ever-expanding pool of knowledge. This concept championed the idea of seamless, unimpeded data flow, heralding a cultural revolution where knowledge would be universally accessible.
Unfortunately, what was once a promise of intellectual empowerment has turned into a maze of relentless, often shallow information streams. Instead of fostering enriched knowledge, it has become a breeding ground for disinformation, cognitive superficiality and all kinds of illicit dealings. The unchecked flood of data, devoid of filters or insight, is eroding critical thinking and threatening the very foundations of genuine knowledge. Thus, the information highway—once a symbol of progress—has become a breeding ground for mounting dangers, heralding the gradual erosion of genuine knowledge.
Thus, it is essential to approach the use of artificial intelligence not as a complete substitute for human capabilities, but as a tool that enables us to transcend our cognitive limitations. Implementing urgent measures—not regulation in the European sense, but rather education on how to effectively use AI—would help strike a healthy balance between technological reliance and the development of intellectual skills.
Ultimately, this is a call for collective responsibility, urging each individual to actively engage in shaping a future where machines and humans coexist in harmony. However, I fear it may already be too late. The widespread availability of open-source LLMs—freely accessible—will likely drive massive adoption of these tools, introducing another imminent danger, which I will address in a future article: the exploitation of the planet’s dwindling resources.
