Google renamed on Monday the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America” in its mapping service for users in the United States.
The change follows an executive order signed by US President Donald Trump in tribute to the “greatness of America,” according to the US Board on Geographic Names.
Google stated that the update aligns with its policy of adapting names based on official government sources. As a result, American users will see “Gulf of America,” while users in Mexico will continue to see “Gulf of Mexico.” In other countries, both names will be displayed.
In response to the decision, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated, “For us and for the entire world, it will remain the Gulf of Mexico.”
This body of water, which borders the southern coast of the United States and the eastern coast of Mexico, is framed by Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mexico and Cuba. Historically, the term “Mexico” originates from the word “Mexica,” used by Indigenous civilizations that inhabited the region before the arrival of European explorers.
