Lebanon is set to make its long-awaited return to the global university basketball competition, with Joe Moujaes leading the national team. The announcement was made during a press conference organized by the Lebanese University Sports Federation at the Lebanese American University (LAU) in Beirut, in the presence of its president, Ziad Saadé, members of the administrative committee, journalists and student basketball players.

An Experienced Coach for an International Challenge

“Since this is a major event, it was essential to appoint a coach who is well-versed in university basketball, familiar with the top players in the university championship, and with extensive international experience,” said Saadé. “We are delighted that Coach Joe Moujaes will be in charge of our team for this highly anticipated University World Cup.”

The Lebanese team will compete in the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 Summer World University Games, which will be held in Germany from July 16 to 27. Lebanon is among the 16 countries selected by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to participate in the tournament – an achievement that recognizes the country’s efforts to establish itself on the international stage.

Valuable Experience for Student Athletes

A former head coach of Lebanon’s senior national team and the current coach of Homenetmen, Moujaes is well-acquainted with the demands of this tournament. He himself experienced it as a player during the 2001 World University Games in Beijing.

“I fully understand the significance of this event as a true university world championship,” said Moujaes. “Lebanon’s return to this competition is a mark of distinction for our basketball program. The recent success of our national teams, especially with the senior team’s participation in the last FIBA World Cup, has strengthened Lebanon’s position on the global stage. Our selection for this university competition is further proof of that – especially considering that major basketball nations like China remain on the waiting list.”

A Rigorous Selection Process

The coach emphasized that player selection will follow a strict and balanced process, considering both athletic performance and academic commitments. Trials will be held to finalize the roster, ensuring that players can effectively balance their studies with international competition.

Aware of the logistical and financial challenges, Moujaes also stressed the importance of securing adequate support to cover travel expenses and other organizational needs.

A Defining Moment

With Moujaes’ appointment and Lebanon’s qualification for the 2025 Summer World University Games, Lebanese university basketball is at a turning point. More than mere participation, this journey represents a unique opportunity to showcase the talent and potential of Lebanon’s student athletes on the global stage. Now, the challenge is to turn ambition into success through rigorous preparation and institutional support that meets the demands ahead.
