The President of the Parliamentary Finance and Budget Committee, Ibrahim Kanaan, called on Wednesday for the withdrawal of the 2025 budget proposal.
The parliamentarian, who has been reiterating this demand since October 2024, said that the budget’s figures no longer reflected reality, deeming them “fictional.”
Kanaan also emphasized that this budget proposal was not distributed to parliamentarians for discussion and that the Finance and Budget Committee failed to do so in light of the war with Israel.
He insisted that “the publication of the budget by decree requires the signature of the president of the Republic.”
He continued, “However, I don’t believe that President Joseph Aoun has an interest in promulgating the 2025 draft budget as adopted by the caretaker government. Therefore, its withdrawal by the caretaker government or future government is not only possible at any time, but necessary.”
