This is Beirut had the pleasure of meeting Hady Habib, the "hero of Melbourne," the first Lebanese player to win a match in a Grand Slam Tournament. In an exclusive interview, he reflects on his historic journey at the Australian Open, his preparation for upcoming challenges like the Davis Cup, and his dream of growing tennis in Lebanon. With heartfelt words, Hady shares his values, love for Lebanon, and desire to see sports unite all Lebanese beyond divisions.

1.You have just returned to Lebanon after your historic performance at the Australian Open. How do you feel about the triumphant welcome you received from the Lebanese people?

It’s truly humbling and emotional to feel the support of my country. Representing Lebanon at this level is an honor, and seeing people proud of my achievements fills me with so much gratitude. I play for moments like this—to give back to Lebanon and show that we are capable of greatness on a global stage. The love and welcome I received remind me why I do what I do.

2. You became the first Lebanese player to win a match in a Grand Slam tournament. What were the most memorable moments of your journey in Melbourne, and what did you learn from this experience?

The most memorable moment was stepping onto the court knowing I was making history for Lebanon. Winning that first-round match and hearing my name associated with my country was incredibly special. This journey taught me the importance of persistence and belief. Competing at this level requires resilience, and this experience reinforced my confidence that I can compete with the best in the world.

3. In February, you will face Peru in the Davis Cup. How are you preparing for this challenge, and what are your expectations for this crucial competition?

The Davis Cup is always a special competition because I’m not just playing for myself—I’m playing for Lebanon. My preparation involves working closely with my coach, focusing on both physical and mental readiness. Peru is a strong team, and we expect tough matches, but I’m confident in my preparation and excited to give it everything I’ve got. Our goal is to make Lebanon proud.

4. Your journey inspires many young people in Lebanon. What message would you like to share with the new generation of Lebanese athletes?

My message is simple: believe in your dreams and work for them every day. No matter the challenges or obstacles, your determination and effort can take you far. Lebanon may be a small country, but our talent and passion are limitless. Always remember that hard work and perseverance will pay off, and never stop representing your roots with pride.

5. What are your long-term goals, both personally and for the development of tennis in Lebanon? Do you envision playing an active role in supporting young talents in the country?

Personally, my goal is to keep improving, climb the rankings, and compete at the highest levels of the sport consistently. For Lebanon, I dream of making tennis more accessible and creating opportunities for young talents to shine. I want to use my platform to inspire and support the next generation of players, whether through mentorship, creating programs, or helping to improve facilities. Tennis in Lebanon has so much potential, and I want to be part of its growth.

6. Are you aware that your sporting achievements have managed to unite all Lebanese, beyond their ethnic, political, and social differences, around your success? How do you feel about this impact on national unity?

It’s the greatest honor to bring people together through sports. Lebanon has gone through so much, and if my success can give even a moment of hope, pride, or joy to my people, that means everything to me. Sports have a unique power to unite, and I’m proud to contribute to something that transcends differences and reminds us that we are stronger together.

7. Do you have anything to add for the readers of Ici Beyrouth?

Thank you for supporting me and Lebanese sports in general. I want to remind everyone that Lebanon has immense potential, not just in tennis but in all areas. With belief, hard work, and unity, we can achieve great things. I’m excited for what’s ahead, and I hope to continue making you proud. Let’s keep pushing forward together!
