Lebanese driver Rafic Eid made history at the Dakar Rally by ranking first among Middle Eastern drivers. Despite major physical and technical challenges, he shone with perseverance and talent, emerging as a symbol of success for Lebanese motorsport.
The international Lebanese driver Rafic Eid successfully overcame all obstacles encountered during the famous Dakar Rally, crossing the finish line in first place among Middle Eastern drivers. He also secured the 9th place in the veterans' category and ranked 58th among the 148 participating riders in the rally.
A Race Filled with Hurdles
During this two-week adventure, Eid had to face numerous challenges: mechanical issues, foot burns, a fracture in one of his toes, and even a fire in the fuel tank of his Yamaha Fantic 450 Rally bike, with a power of 55 horsepower. These setbacks caused him to lose significant time while holding 3rd place in the provisional standings of the veterans' category. Nevertheless, thanks to his unwavering determination and perseverance, Eid managed to cross the finish line as the leading Middle Eastern driver.
Before the start, Eid prepared meticulously. With his second place in the 2024 Baja World Cup and his title in the veterans' category at the Dubai International Rally, he approached Dakar with confidence. "Every race is a learning experience, and I prepared myself to push my limits for this unique adventure," he declared.
A Symbol of Resilience for Lebanon
His courage and sportsmanship earned him a medal, as well as the award for “best sportsmanship" of the rally. Rafic Eid became the first Lebanese driver to complete the Dakar Rally, securing his qualification for the 2026 edition. Reflecting on his achievement, he stated:
"The Dakar Rally was extremely difficult, and I had to overcome numerous challenges. But I managed to finish, and I am proud to have emerged as the top Middle Eastern driver in my first participation in this legendary and demanding event."
The rally covered a total distance of 7,706 km, including 5,146 km of timed stages (one opening stage and 12 specials).
A Promising Future for Rafic Eid
Rafic Eid is now preparing to participate in the eight rounds of the 2025 World Cross-Country Rallies Championship (Baja). The first stage, the Baja Saudi Arabia, will take place from January 30 to February 1. Before the Dakar, Eid intensively tested his Yamaha in Italy, stating that the bike was "a true beast, perfectly suited for desert challenges."
This time, Eid aims to claim the title in the veterans' category, after finishing as world vice-champion last year. With this exceptional performance, he stands out as a source of inspiration, embodying resilience and determination. His journey shows that despite obstacles, it is possible to raise Lebanon's flag high on the international sports scene.
