President Aoun Hails Gaza Ceasefire, Strengthens Diplomatic Ties

Lebanese President General Joseph Aoun welcomed on Thursday the recently brokered ceasefire in Gaza, expressing hope that it would bring an end to the region’s humanitarian crisis.

He commended the international efforts that facilitated the agreement and stressed the importance of Israel adhering to its terms.

President Aoun urged continued oversight by sponsoring nations and the United Nations, emphasizing that Israel’s history of evading commitments remains a significant concern.

Aoun underlined the necessity of establishing an independent Palestinian state in accordance with international resolutions, as well as the urgency of expediting the reconstruction of Gaza and enabling displaced Palestinians to return to their homeland.

Diplomatic Gatherings: Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Qatari Ambassador

Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ayman Safadi, arrived in Lebanon Wednesday and met with President Joseph Aoun. 

After the meeting, Safadi stated, "We firmly support Lebanon at this critical juncture in paving the way for a positive beginning, aiming to reinstate stability and security. We unequivocally advocate for security and stability and stress the importance of Israel adhering to the ceasefire agreement."

He underscored that "Beirut will reclaim its role in the region, and we take pride in Lebanon's leadership. We are committed to providing all necessary assistance to help Lebanon reestablish its prominence. With the combined efforts of its leadership and people, the country will regain its stature."

Furthermore, he mentioned, "Discussions have started regarding Jordan potentially supplying electricity to Lebanon, and these discussions are ongoing."

Safadi also emphasized, "Israel must respect the ceasefire in Lebanon and halt its violations." He reaffirmed Jordan's unwavering support for the Lebanese army, highlighting ongoing discussions with international partners to provide the army with the essential capabilities and resources needed to fulfill its duties.

President Aoun also received Qatari Ambassador Sheikh Saud bin Abdulrahman Al Thani at the Presidential Palace in Baabda on Thursday.

The ambassador conveyed a congratulatory letter from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who expressed optimism for a new era of security and stability in Lebanon under Aoun’s leadership.

The Emir also invited President Aoun for an official visit to Qatar, underscoring the strong ties between the two nations.The ambassador emphasized Qatar’s ongoing commitment to supporting Lebanon, particularly its armed forces.

“Qatar has always been at the forefront of supporting Lebanon politically, economically, and militarily, and we will uphold this commitment in 2025,” he stated.

Aoun Meets Sheikh Sami Abi Al-Muna

On Thursday, President Aoun also met Sheikh Sami Abi Al-Muna, the spiritual leader of the Druze community, accompanied by a delegation.

Sheikh Abi Al-Muna praised the president’s leadership and called for collective efforts to rebuild state institutions and foster trust among citizens.

“It is our shared responsibility to nurture a positive spirit within the nation. I believe that everyone, without exception, will contribute to rebuilding the state,” he stated.
