The issue of Palestinian weapons outside the refugee camps was discussed in a meeting that brought together the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee and Palestinian factions. At the end of the meeting, it was announced that the matter was settled and that no more arms existed outside the camps.
The meeting, held at the Grand Serail on Tuesday, came in line with the commitments made by President Joseph Aoun in his inaugural speech, in which he emphasized Lebanon's sovereignty and determination to extend the state’s exclusive authority on the entire national territory.
During the meeting, Bassel al-Hassan, Chairman of the Lebanese-Palestinian Dialogue Committee, highlighted two key issues: the closure of the arms file outside the camps and the humanitarian rights of Palestinian refugees.
“We convened this meeting in light of a series of major developments in Lebanon, including the ceasefire, the Palestinian situation and internal political changes and their impact on the Palestinians in Lebanon,” Hassan said, adding that this new approach would have a positive impact on Lebanon, its citizens and the Palestinians.
While upholding the right of return to their homeland, Hassan pointed out that a bill concerning the humanitarian rights of Palestinian refugees is currently under review.
The participants underlined the inseparable connection between Lebanon's security, stability and peace and that of the Palestinian refugees, who should refrain from interfering in the country's internal affairs, advocating instead for sustained joint dialogue to implement international agreements.
Hamas combatants and other armed Palestinians claimed several attacks against Israel from south Lebanon during the 13 months of military confrontations between Hezbollah and the Hebrew state, which stopped following the ceasefire agreement on November 27.
