In his first declaration after being nominated, Prime Minister designate Nawaf Salam emphasized the importance of restoring the state’s authority across all of Lebanon in accordance with the Taif Agreement. He also highlighted the need for the full implementation of UN Resolution 1701 and related ceasefire provisions, and securing Israel’s withdrawal from all Lebanese territory.
Following a trilateral meeting with President Joseph Aoun and Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri at Baabda presidential palace on Tuesday, Salam asserted his commitment to dedicate all his efforts to “ensure justice” for the victims of the Beirut port blast.
Furthermore, he emphasized that reconstruction is “not merely a promise, but a binding obligation.”
The PM-designate stressed the need to implement the remaining provisions of the Taif Agreement and called for reforms to address aspects that have been applied in ways contrary to its original text.
“I look forward to fulfilling the aspirations of the youth for change and state-building, in line with the President’s inaugural speech that rekindled hope for the nation’s reconstruction,” he stated.
Highlighting the importance of national partnership, Salam extended an invitation to all, affirming that “the right bet is on our unity.”
He expressed gratitude to the nation’s MPs for their confidence and concluded by stating that he would begin working “immediately with the President to launch the effort to build a new Lebanon.”
It is worth noting that this marks Salam’s first meeting with Aoun and Berri since he was tasked with forming a government on Monday.
