Wicked leads the SAG nominations with five nods, while The Brutalist gets just one and Angelina Jolie is left out. The nominees set the stage for a fierce race ahead of the Oscars.

The highly anticipated film adaptation of Wicked soared to the top of the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, earning five nods, including for "Outstanding Performance by a Cast," the evening's most coveted prize. This recognition places the Broadway adaptation firmly in the race for major accolades, including the Oscars. The nominations also highlighted performances by lead actress Cynthia Erivo, supporting actor Jonathan Bailey, supporting actress Ariana Grande, and the film's stunt ensemble.

In contrast, The Brutalist—an ambitious drama about a Hungarian architect surviving the Holocaust—struggled to secure traction, receiving only a single nomination for Adrien Brody, who won a Golden Globe earlier this week for his portrayal. This omission from the prestigious Outstanding Performance by a Cast category signals potential challenges for the film as it heads into the Oscar race.

Also in the spotlight were A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic, which earned four nominations, and Emilia Perez, a surreal narco-musical that had a strong showing at the Golden Globes, picking up three nods at the SAG Awards. Both films, along with Wicked, are now frontrunners for the top cast award, with Anora, a Cannes favorite, and Conclave, a papal thriller, also securing three nominations each.

Notably absent from the SAG Awards nominations was Angelina Jolie, whose portrayal of opera diva Maria Callas in Maria had been widely anticipated. This omission could signal difficulties for the actress' potential Oscar campaign. Additionally, other major names like Nicole Kidman, lauded for her role in Babygirl, and Fernanda Torres, who won a Golden Globe for I’m Still Here, were also left out of the lead actress race.

In the lead actress category, Wicked star Cynthia Erivo will face tough competition from Globe winner Demi Moore for The Substance, Pamela Anderson for The Last Showgirl, Karla Sofia Gascon for Emilia Perez, and Mikey Madison for Anora. For lead actor, Brody will compete against Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Daniel Craig (Queer), and Colman Domingo (Sing Sing).

Despite its underperformance at the Golden Globes, Wicked found redemption with a strong showing at the SAG nominations, with Grande and Bailey both earning individual recognition. The SAG Awards will be held on February 23 in Los Angeles and will stream live on Netflix, marking the second year of the event’s digital broadcast.

In a somber note, the SAG Awards nominations were announced virtually after the live in-person event was canceled due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, the Critics Choice Awards, also scheduled for this weekend, were postponed in light of the ongoing disaster.

The Directors Guild of America (DGA) also revealed its nominees, with Anora, Emilia Perez, Conclave, The Brutalist, and A Complete Unknown all receiving nods. Notably, Jon Chu was left off the list for Wicked, despite its widespread recognition. The DGA Awards will take place on February 10.
