The opposition and Change MPs are gearing up for the upcoming presidential election session scheduled for January 9.

MP Waddah Sadek revealed to LBCI that the opposition would announce its preferred presidential candidate tonight or tomorrow at 9 PM. He dismissed reports of General Baissari’s withdrawal, clarifying that Baissari has indicated he would not run as a confrontational candidate and would only accept a consensus-based nomination.

MP Nadim Gemayel stated that within 24 hours, opposition MPs would present a unified presidential candidate for voting.

In an interview with Houna Loubnan, he said, “There are ongoing discussions, and the last 48 hours are usually marked by a ‘tug of war,’ but the most important thing is for the opposition to enter the session unified.”

For his part, the head of the Lebanese Forces (LF) party, Samir Geagea, expressed his willingness to consider Army Commander General Joseph Aoun as a presidential candidate, but only if the “axis of resistance” publicly endorses him.

Geagea criticized the “Resistance” group for opposing Aoun’s candidacy, accusing them of misrepresenting the LF as the main obstacle. He said, “The Resistance group, allied with the Free Patriotic Movement, has used their blocking third to hinder Aoun’s nomination.”

Geagea further emphasized his party’s openness to reconsidering Aoun's candidacy, stating, “We are willing to reconsider Aoun's candidacy if the Resistance alters its stance and formally announces support.”
