The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced in a report Friday that some 58 000 people have returned to Syria since December 8, following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime.
“Refugees have returned from Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan, with the main destinations being the governorates of Raqqa, Aleppo, Homs, and Daraa, and nearly half of those returning to Syria are children,” the UNHCR said.
“The increase has been slow but steady since then, as they have established working relationships with the new government. In contrast, military operations in northeast Syria continue to hinder the delivery of humanitarian aid. In the northwest, criminal activities have been reported in some major urban areas, including kidnappings and robberies. Incidents caused by unexploded ordnance continue to affect civilians."
added the UNHCR report.
It also noted that the Turkish government announced that it will establish a temporary “go and see” visitation mechanism from January 1 until July 1, 2025, allowing the head of the family to visit Syria three times during the six-month period.
