The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Monday urged the Israeli military to speed up its withdrawal from the area, nearly a month after a ceasefire came into effect.
“UNIFIL strongly urges accelerated progress in the Israeli army withdrawal from and the Lebanese Army deployment in south Lebanon,” the force said in a statement, calling on “all actors to cease and refrain from violations of resolution 1701 and any actions that could jeopardize the fragile stability that currently prevails.”
This statement was released following the visit of caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and Army Commander-in-Chief General Joseph Aoun to South Lebanon on Monday.
Both met with UNIFIL head of mission and Force Commander General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz. The discussions were held at UNIFIL's sector east headquarters in Ibl al-Saqi.
“UN Peacekeepers will continue to monitor and report violations of resolution 1701, and to support the return to the cessation of hostilities,” the statement added.
