Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri affirmed on Friday that “efforts are ongoing so that on the parliamentary session of January 9, a president is elected.”
He reaffirmed that he has no plans to postpone the session and has not been asked to do so by political forces in remarks to the Saudi daily Asharq al-Awsat.
He emphasized that “presidency comes first” and refuted reports that he was attempting to secure earlier agreements on the future government, the prime minister’s name, the government’s composition and its ministerial statement.
Berri further stated that “everything will become clear during the session” in reference to his ally, former Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) leader Walid Joumblatt, backing Army commander General Joseph Aoun in the presidential race.
