Caretaker Minister of Agriculture Abbas al-Hajj Hassan gave out wheat seeds to farmers in the Zahle and Beqaa areas on Thursday as part of the Ministry of Agriculture's yearly initiative to increase the area planted with soft and durum wheat in Lebanon.
The International Center for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies (ICAMAS) in Bari and the UNDP are collaborating to carry out the program. The development of rural and coastal areas, food and nutritional security, and sustainable agriculture are the goals of the intergovernmental organization ICAMAS.
Furthermore, given that Lebanon’s plains are suited for the plentiful production of soft wheat, Hajj Hassan underlined that these collaborations are a component of the Ministry's assistance for farms looking to create soft wheat in Lebanon, cut imports, and eventually become self-sufficient.
It is noteworthy that Hajj Hassan will oversee the ACSAD 1133 soft wheat seed distribution in the Akkar and Baalbeck-Hermel areas on Saturday.
