The parliamentarians of the “Independent Parliamentary Bloc” (former Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) MPs), Elias Bou Saab, Simon Abi Ramia, Ibrahim Kanaan and Alain Aoun met with Samy Gemayel, the head of the Kataeb Party, on Tuesday over the long-delayed presidential election.

Following the meeting, Abi Ramia emphasized that several potential candidates for the upcoming presidential election were reviewed.

He highlighted that the group agreed on the need to choose a “national unity president,” to overlook the new phase Lebanon has entered following the ceasefire agreement on November 27.

Abi Ramia stressed that internal unity should be a priority, and the next president must support the new roadmap and ensure the implementation of the agreement to halt hostilities.

He added that the national interest must take precedence and expressed hope that all parliamentary blocs could agree on a candidate.

“We cannot exclude any political component or impose a particular political path on others,” he said, underlining the importance of “Lebanizing” discourse, mentalities and behaviors.

The “Independent Parliamentary Bloc” MPs are actively engaging with various parliamentary groups to resolve the presidential deadlock, which has left the presidential seat vacant since October 2022.

Earlier this week, they met with Samir Geagea, the head of the Lebanese Forces, in Meerab, describing the meeting as “fruitful and constructive.”
