At the Beverly Hilton Hotel on December 9, 2024, the Golden Globes announced Emilia Perez as the top contender. With ten nominations, Jacques Audiard’s musical comedy leads the race. The ceremony will take place on January 5, 2024.

Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Perez is the leading contender at the 82nd Golden Globes, securing an impressive ten nominations across various categories. The nominations were revealed on December 9, 2024, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.

The musical comedy tells the story of a Mexican drug lord, played by transgender actress Karla Sofia Gascon, who embarks on a journey to transform their life and identity, becoming a woman. With its genre-blending narrative—part thriller, part telenovela—the film also stars Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana in standout roles.

Having already won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, Emilia Perez continues to break barriers with its bold storytelling and dynamic cast. Jacques Audiard, who is also nominated for Best Director, described his journey to the Oscars as “terrifying” but acknowledged the film’s wide-reaching impact.

Strong Competition in Major Categories

While Emilia Perez dominates with ten nominations, other films are also making waves. Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist, a poignant historical drama about a Hungarian Jewish architect surviving the Holocaust, follows with seven nominations. Ralph Fiennes stars in Conclave, a gripping Vatican thriller that has garnered six nominations.

In the Best Comedy or Musical category, Emilia Perez faces tough competition from Wicked, Anora, Challengers, and Coralie Fargeat’s feminist horror The Substance. Demi Moore shines in The Substance as a former fitness star confronting societal pressures around aging, while Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo earn nods for their performances in Wicked.

Recognitions Across Genres

Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldana are both nominated for supporting roles in Emilia Perez. Meanwhile, Karla Sofia Gascon competes for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical against Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Demi Moore (The Substance), and Zendaya (Challengers). In the dramatic category, Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Timothée Chalamet (A Perfect Stranger) are strong contenders for Best Actor, alongside Ralph Fiennes (Conclave).

Television is also in the spotlight, with The Bear earning five nominations, followed by Shogun and Only Murders in the Building, each with four. Jeremy Allen White (The Bear) and Selena Gomez (Only Murders in the Building) are among the nominees for their stellar performances.

The Golden Globes’ Revitalized Legacy

After undergoing significant reforms following a 2021 controversy, the Golden Globes have regained their credibility as a vital platform leading to the Oscars. Now operated by private investors, the ceremony aims to bolster its reputation with a diverse and compelling lineup.

With its ten nominations, Emilia Perez dominates this year’s awards season and underscores the evolving narrative landscape in cinema and television.
