The international committee tasked with monitoring the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel held its first meeting on Monday.

“The United States, France, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), the Lebanese Army (LAF) and the Israeli army met on December 9 in Naqoura to coordinate their support for the cessation of hostilities that went into effect on November 27,” a joint statement from the American and French embassies in Lebanon and UNIFIL announced on Monday.

It noted that “UNIFIL hosted the meeting as set out in the announcement, with the US serving as chair, assisted by France, and joined by representatives of the Lebanese and Israeli armies.”

“This mechanism will meet regularly and coordinate closely to advance implementation of the ceasefire agreement and UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” the statement concluded.

As stipulated in the ceasefire agreement, the ceasefire monitoring committee is a developed version of the tripartite observation committee originally set up under Resolution 1701. This allows stakeholders to bypass potential legal obligations and institutional recourse.
