Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati stressed on Sunday the urgent need to tighten control on the border with Syria and follow up on the issue of Lebanese citizens believed to have been detained in Syrian prisons.
"There is a need to tighten border controls and protect Lebanon from the repercussions of developments in Syria," Mikati said in a call with Army commander Gen. Joseph Aoun. He also urged Lebanese citizens to "exercise wisdom and avoid emotional reactions, particularly during these critical times."
Mikati also instructed Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers Judge Mahmoud Makkiya to coordinate with the National Commission for the Missing and Forcibly Disappeared in Lebanon, established under Law 105/2018, and the committee handling the issue of Lebanese detainees in Syria, formed under Decision 2005/43.
Highlighting the recent release of hundreds of detainees from Syrian prisons following the collapse of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Mikati requested the “mobilization of all available resources and engaging with relevant parties."
In response, Makkiya called for an emergency meeting of the two bodies handling the issue of the detainees within hours to coordinate efforts.
