The US special envoy to Lebanon, Amos Hochstein, believes that “the war in Syria is not directly related to Lebanon, but it will have an impact on the country.”
He declared, “I don't think we've eliminated or defeated Hezbollah, but it may no longer be strong enough to attack Israel or support President Bashar al-Assad.” In fact, he stressed that “what's happening in Syria weakens Hezbollah, because it makes it difficult for Iran, which is on the verge of withdrawing from Damascus and finding itself unable to send arms to the country.”
Commenting on the situation in Lebanon, he asserted that the ceasefire agreement reached on November 27 on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 1701 was indispensable. He added that “Washington will have to step up its support for the Lebanese army.”
