Kamal Kharrazi, chairman of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations and adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader, told the Al-Mayadeen news agency, which is close to Hezbollah, that Tehran is likely to increase the range of its ballistic missiles. He added that Iran currently has the ability to produce nuclear weapons.

“We now have the technical capabilities to produce nuclear weapons. The ruling of the Supreme Leader is the only thing that prevents us from producing one.”

“We're ready for war, but we don't want escalation, because we've already proved our deterrent capability,” he added, before pointing out that the ball was now in the Israelis' court.

“If they really want to continue, we'll respond. Our missile capabilities are clear to everyone and everyone believes in them, and we've proved it in our operations.”

Kharrazi also told the Lebanese media that Iran's nuclear doctrine could change if the nation faced an existential threat.

The Iranian government has long denied that it is seeking to build nuclear weapons and insists that its program is intended for peaceful purposes.

In recent years, it has reduced its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency while considerably accelerating its nuclear program.
