Pope Francis expressed his solidarity on Friday with the Spanish populations affected by the floods, which have resulted in at least 158 deaths and dozens of missing persons.

"Let us pray for the people of the Iberian Peninsula, especially for the community of Valencia, ravaged by storm Dana," the name given in Italy to the severe weather that struck Spain, the pope said at the end of the Angelus prayer.

"May God support those who are suffering and the rescue workers," he added, expressing his "solidarity with the people of Valencia."

The Valencia region was devastated on Tuesday evening and into the night between Tuesday and Wednesday by catastrophic floods that caused the deaths of 155 people. Three other people died in neighboring regions, and dozens are missing.
