Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri announced that “an agreement on a final ceasefire is currently being discussed,” revealing an agreement with United States envoy Amos Hochstein on the implementation of United Nations resolution 1701, “without any amendments.”

“We will start working to elect a consensus president for Lebanon after the ceasefire,” he affirmed in an interview with Sky News Arabia on Thursday.

Additionally, Berri made clear that the Lebanese Army will take over the executive mechanisms of Resolution 1701 to maintain stability, reiterating his adherence to the role of  The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) as a guarantor of the implementation of the international resolution.

On Monday, Berri had received the American envoy who underscored that resolution 1701 ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict and would be the basis of a new ceasefire, “but would require more than just public commitments from the warring parties.”
