Israel confirmed on Tuesday that it has killed Hashem Safieddine, the presumed successor of slain Hezbollah’s Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah.

Safieddine, the head of Hezbollah’s Executive Council, was the most likely successor to Nasrallah, who is also his cousin.

Safieddine’s body, along with the corpses of 23 other persons, all believed to be senior members of Hezbollah, were recovered on Tuesday in Mrayje neighborhood in Beirut’s southern suburb.

Their fate has remained unconfirmed since the Israeli attack that targeted them on October 3.

According to the Israeli military, the 23 corpses recovered along with Safieddine’s included Saeb Ayyash, head of Hezbollah's air force intelligence, Mahmoud Mohammed Shaheen, Hezbollah's intelligence chief in Syria, and head of Hezbollah’s intelligence Ali Hussein Hazimeh.

Safieddine had been targeted inside Hezbollah's deepest bunker, according to Axios.

At the same time, the Israeli media revealed that 73 tons of bombs had been used in the assassination attempt on Hashem Safieddine in the southern suburbs of Beirut on Thursday October 3.

The attack was described as the largest since the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah on September 27.
