A parliamentary session aimed at electing two secretaries, three commissioners, and members of parliamentary committees was canceled on Monday due to a lack of quorum.
Speaker Nabih Berri had called for the session, but only 49 MPs attended, falling short of the required number.
The absence of MPs from the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) significantly contributed to the session's failure.
Following the lack of quorum, Deputy Speaker Elias Bou Saab remarked, “Since there was no quorum, and considering precedents for today’s situation, the parliament has decided to regard the current body as standing with all its members.”
Bou Saab expressed hope that the next session would prioritize the election of a president, noting that Berri would call for a presidential vote once the ongoing war subsides.
Frustration was palpable among the MPs present, who voiced disappointment over the lost opportunity to address urgent national concerns.
MP George Adwan of the Strong Republic bloc emphasized the need to respect institutional processes to resolve Lebanon’s crises. “We participated in the session because it is our duty, despite the difficult circumstances,” Adwan stated. “The solution lies within the institutions, as they are the only means to save the country.”
Adwan also criticized the absence of other MPs, arguing that their non-attendance undermines efforts to elect a president.
Former FPM MP Ibrahim Kanaan echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Lebanon cannot be left without leadership at a time when our society is facing immense challenges.”
Change MPs also voiced their concerns. MP Sajih Attieh emphasized the importance of honoring the Ain al-Tineh meeting’s decisions, particularly regarding the election of a president.
“We participated today because we believe in permanent attendance, especially within the Moderation bloc, which seeks to unite the various factions,” Attieh said. “However, the lack of quorum has hindered progress.”
Change MP Melhem Khalaf urged political leaders to view the ongoing war as a chance for national salvation, stressing the need to elect a president. “Once again, it is clear that saving the country is not a priority,” he remarked.
MP Waddah Sadek called on Parliament Speaker Berri to take decisive national action, highlighting the urgency of leadership in securing a ceasefire and safeguarding Lebanon's stability.
“We urge Berri to follow the national decision that protects the country and its people, leading us toward a ceasefire,” Sadek stated.
