In surprising news on Sunday, social media users began sharing tweets and Facebook posts from the local news platforms of Future TV. The channel, owned by the family of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, had started publishing news just a few hours earlier. Future TV's accounts have returned to Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), posting updates after years of inactivity.
Hussein Wajeh, Saad Hariri’s media advisor, announced on his X account that "starting today (Sunday), the website of Future Television and its affiliated social media platforms will operate again." He expressed hope that "this step will help follow the significant events taking place and reaffirm the continuity of a national institution that has left its mark in the field of media."
In 2019, Hariri announced the suspension of Future TV, whose employees had been on strike over unpaid wages. “It is with a sad heart that I announce today the decision to suspend work at Future TV and settle the rights of the workers,” Hariri’s office said in a statement. He explained that the decision was driven by “the same financial reasons that led to the closure of Al-Mustaqbal newspaper” in January 2019.
It remains unclear whether this move is related to the former prime minister’s return to Lebanon and political life, particularly at this critical moment the country is facing.
