The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Tuesday that nine people were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a building in Damascus, used by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps for meetings with Hezbollah. The Syrian Defense Ministry announced that among the dead were women and children.

The target of the airstrike was a top Hezbollah official in the group’s Unit 4400, the Saudi news outlet al-Hadath reported. Unit 4400 is tasked with delivering weapons from Iran and its proxies to Hezbollah in Lebanon.

The strike was carried out against an apartment building in the Mezzeh district of the capital Damascus, a few hundred meters from the Iranian embassy.

"The Israeli enemy launched an aerial aggression... targeting a residential and commercial building in the densely populated Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus killing seven civilians, including children and women," the Ministry said.

It said the toll was preliminary, as rescuers were still searching for survivors under the rubble.

"Israel targeted a building frequented by senior Revolutionary Guard Corps and Hezbollah operatives, as well as a car parked in front of the building... killing four people," the Britain-based SOHR stated.

Earlier, Syria's official SANA news agency reported an Israeli strike on a residential building in the Mazzeh neighborhood of Damascus, which is home to security headquarters and embassies.

AFPTV footage from the scene showed a building engulfed in smoke, with rubble and torn metal strewn on the ground. An AFP correspondent counted about 20 cars damaged by the falling debris.
