‘Tnein Bel Lel:’ An Evening of Unbridled Laughter

Attending a theater performance on a Saturday night in Beirut can hold its share of (good) surprises, as the Le Monnot theater provides so well. Such is the case with Tnein Bel Lel, an eccentric and bold musical comedy, distinguished by its originality and element of surprise. A true laughter therapy is guaranteed.

The atmosphere was electric last night among the audience, testifying to this play’s ability to sweep its audience into an unparalleled whirlwind of laughter. Conceived, written and directed by Samer Hanna, the play unfolds in a burst of humor. Produced by Jukebox Productions, it is a brilliant reflection on life, friendships that emerge where one least expects, and the magic of human connections, thus demonstrating the power of comedy to unite and transform.
At the heart of Tnein Bel Lel, we find Wael, a writer on the brink of despair with an unusual exit plan from life. His existence and plans are turned upside down by Lisa, his effervescent neighbor, triggering a series of hilarious misunderstandings that captivate the audience. The arrival of Wael’s mother, portrayed with sophistication by Josyane Boulos, enriches the narrative. Among these characters, a myriad of situations woven from misunderstandings unfolds, with Lisa unwittingly becoming the muse that reignites Wael’s will to live. Certain scenes are reminiscent of comic strips and commedia dell’arte, bringing a visual dimension and dynamism that evoke these classic art forms, thus enriching the spectacle with stage play that oscillates between the grotesque and the sublime.
The troupe, led by Josyane Boulos, Julien Chaaya and Yara Antoun, brings this story to life with an energy that sweeps the audience away. The integration of live singing by the actors, accompanied by music from a live orchestra composed by Anthony Youssef, Wajih Saade, and Mayssa Abou Chrouche, adds a unique dimension to the show.
The talent of Joanna Toubia, the avant-garde choreography by Romario Akiki, and the artistic expertise of Charbil Abi Nader unite to enrich the spectacle. The backstage production, orchestrated by Lynn Bawab as assistant director and by Hagop Derghougassian for the lighting design, with textual support from Macy Abboud, contributes to the harmony of the play. Tnein Bel Lel celebrates life’s surprises and the happiness found in the most unexpected moments. It reminds us of the cathartic effect of laughter and human connection, offering a must-see theatrical experience.
