The United States carried out airstrikes on Friday in eastern Syria, resulting in the reported deaths of at least 18 pro-Iran fighters, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The strikes targeted Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups.
The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the operation, stating that over 85 targets were struck, employing more than 125 precision munitions. The targeted facilities included command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets and missiles, unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities associated with militia groups and their IRGC sponsors.
President Joe Biden asserted in a statement that these strikes were carried out in response to attacks against US forces by Iranian-backed factions. He emphasized that the "US does not seek conflict in the Middle East or elsewhere."
The airstrikes drew swift condemnation from Iraq, which labeled them a "violation of its sovereignty."
