In the context of combating illegal infiltration and smuggling across land borders, units of the army thwarted attempts by some 900 Syrians to infiltrate the Lebanese-Syrian border during January this year.
The General Directorate of General Security announced on Wednesday that a convoy of buses would soon be leaving for Damascus, as part of the voluntary return of Syrian nationals to their country. The date of the convoy's departure will be announced later, the statement reads.
"Applications from people wishing to 'return voluntarily' will be accepted starting Thursday, February 1, at the General Security offices throughout Lebanon," the SG said in a statement.
It should be noted that 790,000 displaced Syrians are registered with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), according to figures from the UN agency. However, General Security estimates that there are at least 1.8 million Syrian nationals living in Lebanon, many of them illegally.
