Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) spokesman said on Wednesday, December 27 that the Hamas attacks on Israel on October 7 were carried out in revenge for the US drone strike that killed General Qassem Soleimani, former head of the al-Quds Force, the IRGC's foreign operations arm, on January 3, 2020.

"Al-Aqsa Flood was one of the acts of revenge for the assassination of General Soleimani by the United States and the Zionists," said IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif, according to remarks reported by Iranian news agency ISNA.

"It is certain that these acts of revenge will continue at different times and in different places," Sharif added.

However, Hamas swiftly denied Sharif's remarks. "We deny the statements made by a spokesman for the Revolutionary Guards concerning the operation and its motives," announced the Islamist movement controlling the Gaza Strip in a statement published a few hours after Sharif's statement.

Hamas also stated "on several occasions the reasons for the operation, the main one being the threats to the Al-Aqsa Mosque," adding that "any response by the Palestinian resistance is a response to the occupation and aggression against the Palestinian people and the holy places."
