US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Tel Aviv on Thursday December 14. This visit comes at a time when the White House is beginning to express its dissatisfaction with the destruction caused by the Israeli offensive.
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan arrived in Israel on Thursday, where he met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip.
A photo released by the Israeli Prime Minister's office showed the two men shaking hands in Tel Aviv.
The Israeli army must find a way to reduce the intensity of its strikes, Sullivan had suggested before his arrival in Jerusalem.
The United States, a fervent supporter of the Israelis and opposed to an immediate ceasefire, which in its view would leave Hamas in control of the territory, has expressed its impatience in recent days, with President Joe Biden criticizing "indiscriminate bombing" and suggesting a possible "erosion" of Western support for Israel.
According to Steve Cohen, a Democrat elected to the House of Representatives, the purpose of Sullivan's trip is precisely to express this discontent.
"Netanyahu has gone way too far and Jake Sullivan will inform him that bombing must be drastically limited or Israel will be deprived of its last true friend, the United States and Joe Biden," he wrote in a message on X (formerly Twitter).
"The President is done with Bibi's Putin-style no-holds-barred war. Hostages first! Civilians never," he added.
However, Israel's Defense Minister warned on Thursday that the war against Hamas in Gaza would last "more than a few months," as an American envoy arrived to express US concern at the heavy civilian casualties in the besieged Palestinian territory.
"Hamas is a terrorist organization that has built itself up over a decade to fight Israel and has developed an underground and airborne infrastructure that is not easy to destroy. It will take time - more than a few months - but we will defeat and destroy" Hamas, said Gallant.
