- Gaza Attack Targeted Suspected Israeli Nuclear Base (NYT)
A visual analysis by The New York Times after Hamas’ October 7 attack revealed that a rocket launched from Gaza during the attack hit an Israeli military base said to be the site of nuclear-capable missiles and caused a fire there, the paper reported on Monday.
Israel has never admitted to possessing nuclear weapons, but experts agree that the country holds at least a limited number of such weapons.
“While the missiles themselves weren’t hit, the rocket’s impact, at the Sdot Micha base in central Israel, sparked a fire that approached missile storage facilities and other sensitive weaponry,” the report said.
The report noted that the chances the missiles were vulnerable to a rocket attack were extremely low, and that the missiles themselves were not harmed.
The strike is the first recorded case of Palestinian militants targeting a site of Israeli nuclear weapons. The report added that it is not clear if Hamas or another Gaza militant group was aware of the type of facility they were targeting.
